What is this condition?
Influenza is a viral infection that can cause sudden fever and marked tiredness. Call the clinic before visiting with possible influenza.
Main symptoms
Fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, cough or a sore throat. Symptoms overlap with other respiratory infections.
Causes
Influenza viruses spread between people. Symptoms alone cannot reliably distinguish influenza from all other infections.
When to see a clinician
Call for advice when influenza is suspected. People with severe symptoms or a risk of complications should not delay care simply to wait for a test to become positive.
Examination and tests
We review symptom onset and medical history. Testing is chosen according to the timing and clinical situation, and results are interpreted alongside the examination.
Tests are selected according to your symptoms and examination. Specialist tests or procedures may require referral.
Treatment
Antiviral medicines are generally most useful when started early, often within 48 hours, but treatment decisions depend on age, severity and medical history. Seek advice even after 48 hours, especially if unwell or at higher risk.
These are general treatment options. Your clinician will discuss which approach fits your condition; not every treatment described is provided at this clinic.
What you can do at home
Rest, drink fluids and follow advice on reducing spread. Caregivers should watch for unusual behaviour in children and changes in breathing or responsiveness.
Frequently asked questions
Should I wait until tomorrow to get a more reliable test?
Do not delay care if symptoms are severe or you are at higher risk. Call to discuss the appropriate timing.
What should I tell the clinician?
Tell us when symptoms began, whether they are changing, your medicines and allergies, and any relevant medical conditions. For a child, describe changes in feeding, sleep or response to sound.
