Causes

Fluid can remain after a middle ear infection or develop when the Eustachian tube is not working well. Nasal inflammation may contribute.

When to see a clinician

Seek advice if hearing changes persist or affect a child’s speech, learning or response to their name. Persistent one-sided fluid in adults also needs assessment.

Examination and tests

The eardrum is checked and hearing or eardrum-mobility tests may be used. The nose and throat may also be examined.

Tests are selected according to your symptoms and examination. Specialist tests or procedures may require referral.

Treatment

Fluid may resolve, so hearing and the eardrum are monitored. Persistent fluid, substantial hearing effects or eardrum changes may lead to consideration of ventilation tubes.

These are general treatment options. Your clinician will discuss which approach fits your condition; not every treatment described is provided at this clinic.

What you can do at home

Speak clearly, reduce background noise and let teachers know about hearing difficulty. Keep planned follow-up appointments.

Frequently asked questions

Can a child have glue ear without pain?

Yes. Reduced hearing or changes in attention may be the main signs.

What should I tell the clinician?

Tell us when symptoms began, whether they are changing, your medicines and allergies, and any relevant medical conditions. For a child, describe changes in feeding, sleep or response to sound.
