Difficulty hearing
Hearing can change gradually or suddenly. An ear examination and hearing test help distinguish treatable blockage from inner-ear or other causes.
What to know first
Asking others to repeat themselves, difficulty in background noise, muffled sound or a difference between ears.
When to see a clinician
Seek prompt assessment for a sudden change. Gradual hearing difficulty, persistent one-sided symptoms or effects on a child’s development also deserve review.
Possible causes
Earwax, middle ear disease, sudden sensorineural loss, noise damage and age-related hearing loss are among the possibilities.
Examination and tests
We examine the ears and assess hearing. Further testing is selected according to the type and pattern of loss.
Tests are selected according to your symptoms and examination. Specialist tests or procedures may require referral.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the cause. Some conditions improve with ear treatment; others may benefit from hearing aids or specialist support.
These are general treatment options. Your clinician will discuss which approach fits your condition; not every treatment described is provided at this clinic.
What you can do at home
Reduce background noise, face the person speaking and avoid loud sound exposure. Bring details of any hearing device already used.
Frequently asked questions
Is reduced hearing always due to age?
No. Age-related loss is one possibility, but earwax and other ear conditions should also be considered.
What should I tell the clinician?
Tell us when symptoms began, whether they are changing, your medicines and allergies, and any relevant medical conditions. For a child, describe changes in feeding, sleep or response to sound.
