What is this condition?
A sudden change in hearing, especially in one ear, needs prompt ENT assessment, ideally the same day. Pain may be absent.
Main symptoms
Reduced hearing, new tinnitus, a blocked-ear sensation or dizziness.
Causes
Sudden sensorineural hearing loss has no immediately identifiable cause. Other ear and neurological conditions must be considered before the diagnosis is made.
When to see a clinician
Seek care as soon as you notice the change. Even if some time has passed, assessment is still important.
Examination and tests
Ear examination and hearing tests help identify the type and degree of loss. Further investigations or specialist referral may be needed.
Tests are selected according to your symptoms and examination. Specialist tests or procedures may require referral.
Treatment
Steroids or other treatment may be considered according to hearing results, medical history and time since onset. Benefits and side effects are discussed; recovery is not guaranteed.
These are general treatment options. Your clinician will discuss which approach fits your condition; not every treatment described is provided at this clinic.
What you can do at home
Avoid further loud sound exposure and record when the change began. Do not delay seeking help while trying ear cleaning or home remedies.
Frequently asked questions
Should I wait because the ear does not hurt?
No. Sudden hearing loss can occur without pain and should be assessed promptly.
What should I tell the clinician?
Tell us when symptoms began, whether they are changing, your medicines and allergies, and any relevant medical conditions. For a child, describe changes in feeding, sleep or response to sound.
