Tinnitus
Tinnitus is hearing a sound such as ringing or buzzing without an external source. Hearing changes and the effect on daily life help guide assessment.
What to know first
Ringing, buzzing, humming or other sounds in one or both ears.
When to see a clinician
Seek advice for persistent or distressing tinnitus, symptoms on one side, or a sound that pulses with your heartbeat.
Possible causes
Hearing loss, noise exposure and ear conditions may be associated. Sometimes no single cause is found.
Examination and tests
We examine the ears and assess hearing. The pattern may indicate a need for additional investigation or referral.
Tests are selected according to your symptoms and examination. Specialist tests or procedures may require referral.
Treatment
Treatment addresses identified ear disease and ways to reduce the burden. Hearing support and strategies for sleep or distress may help; there is no single treatment that cures every case.
These are general treatment options. Your clinician will discuss which approach fits your condition; not every treatment described is provided at this clinic.
What you can do at home
Protect against loud noise, keep a regular sleep routine and consider gentle background sound rather than complete silence if helpful.
Frequently asked questions
Does tinnitus always mean a serious disease?
No, but new, one-sided, pulsating or troublesome tinnitus should be assessed.
What should I tell the clinician?
Tell us when symptoms began, whether they are changing, your medicines and allergies, and any relevant medical conditions. For a child, describe changes in feeding, sleep or response to sound.
