Allergic rhinitis
Allergic rhinitis is inflammation of the nose caused by an allergic response to substances such as pollen or house dust mites.
What is this condition?
Allergic rhinitis is inflammation of the nose caused by an allergic response to substances such as pollen or house dust mites.
Main symptoms
Sneezing, a clear runny nose, a blocked nose and sometimes itchy eyes.
Causes
Pollen can cause seasonal symptoms. Mites, animals and other indoor allergens can cause symptoms throughout the year. Other types of rhinitis may look similar.
When to see a clinician
Seek advice if symptoms disturb sleep, school or work, or medicines do not help. Persistent symptoms on one side or blood-stained discharge also need assessment.
Examination and tests
The nasal lining is examined. Allergy blood tests may be considered when identifying a trigger would help treatment. A positive result must be interpreted alongside symptoms.
Tests are selected according to your symptoms and examination. Specialist tests or procedures may require referral.
Treatment
Treatment may include reducing allergen exposure, antihistamines and steroid nasal sprays. Honda ENT Clinic does not provide sublingual immunotherapy. During outpatient consultations, we explain what the treatment involves, who may be eligible, its expected benefits and precautions.
These are general treatment options. Your clinician will discuss which approach fits your condition; not every treatment described is provided at this clinic.
What you can do at home
Reduce relevant triggers and follow instructions for nasal sprays. Tell us if you drive, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or take other medicines.
Frequently asked questions
Does every positive allergy test explain my symptoms?
No. Test results show sensitisation, but the timing and pattern of symptoms help determine whether an allergen is actually causing problems.
What should I tell the clinician?
Tell us when symptoms began, whether they are changing, your medicines and allergies, and any relevant medical conditions. For a child, describe changes in feeding, sleep or response to sound.
Do you offer sublingual immunotherapy?
Honda ENT Clinic does not provide sublingual immunotherapy. During outpatient consultations, we explain what the treatment involves, who may be eligible, its expected benefits and precautions.
