Causes

The nasal nerves and blood vessels may react to irritants or temperature changes. Allergy and sinus disease can cause similar symptoms.

When to see a clinician

Seek advice for recurrent troublesome symptoms, ineffective over-the-counter treatment, or persistent pain, bleeding or symptoms on one side.

Examination and tests

We review triggers and examine the nose. Tests are selected when allergy or another condition needs to be distinguished.

Tests are selected according to your symptoms and examination. Specialist tests or procedures may require referral.

Treatment

Avoiding relevant triggers and using suitable nasal medicines may help. Treatment is adjusted according to the response.

These are general treatment options. Your clinician will discuss which approach fits your condition; not every treatment described is provided at this clinic.

What you can do at home

Avoid smoke and strong scents where possible. Reduce abrupt temperature changes and avoid prolonged use of decongestant sprays.

Frequently asked questions

Is a temperature-change allergy a true allergy?

The term is often used informally, but these symptoms do not always result from an allergic reaction.

What should I tell the clinician?

Tell us when symptoms began, whether they are changing, your medicines and allergies, and any relevant medical conditions. For a child, describe changes in feeding, sleep or response to sound.
