Postnasal drip
Postnasal drip describes mucus draining into the throat. It is a symptom rather than a single disease, so both the nose and throat are assessed.
What to know first
Mucus in the throat, frequent throat clearing, cough or a sensation of phlegm.
When to see a clinician
Seek advice if symptoms persist, disturb sleep or accompany reduced smell. Blood, weight loss or difficulty swallowing need earlier assessment.
Possible causes
Rhinitis and sinusitis are possible causes. Dryness, reflux or other throat conditions can cause similar sensations.
Examination and tests
We ask about nasal and throat symptoms and examine these areas. Further testing depends on the findings.
Tests are selected according to your symptoms and examination. Specialist tests or procedures may require referral.
Treatment
Treatment targets a confirmed or likely cause, such as rhinitis or sinusitis. Persistent symptoms require review rather than simply adding more medicines.
These are general treatment options. Your clinician will discuss which approach fits your condition; not every treatment described is provided at this clinic.
What you can do at home
Drink fluids and avoid repeated forceful throat clearing. Use nasal treatment only as advised.
Frequently asked questions
Is mucus in the throat always from the nose?
No. Throat and airway conditions can feel similar, and more than one cause may be present.
What should I tell the clinician?
Tell us when symptoms began, whether they are changing, your medicines and allergies, and any relevant medical conditions. For a child, describe changes in feeding, sleep or response to sound.
