What is this condition?

Acute sinusitis is inflammation of the spaces around the nose, often following a cold. The colour of nasal discharge alone does not determine whether antibiotics are needed.

Main symptoms

A runny or blocked nose, facial pain or pressure, postnasal drip and sometimes fever. Children may mainly have a cough.

Causes

Viral infections are common triggers. Bacterial infection may develop in some cases; the course and severity help guide treatment.

When to see a clinician

Seek advice if symptoms persist, worsen again after improving, or include significant fever or facial pain.

Examination and tests

We examine the nose and review the duration and progression of symptoms. Imaging is considered when the findings or course make it necessary.

Tests are selected according to your symptoms and examination. Specialist tests or procedures may require referral.

Treatment

Nasal care and medicines may help symptoms. Antibiotics are considered when bacterial infection is sufficiently likely. Persistent or recurrent symptoms require reassessment.

These are general treatment options. Your clinician will discuss which approach fits your condition; not every treatment described is provided at this clinic.

What you can do at home

Rest, drink fluids and use prescribed medicines as directed. Do not start leftover antibiotics. Ask how to perform nasal rinsing safely if it is recommended.

Frequently asked questions

Does green nasal discharge mean I need antibiotics?

No. Discharge colour alone cannot reliably distinguish a bacterial infection from other causes.

What should I tell the clinician?

Tell us when symptoms began, whether they are changing, your medicines and allergies, and any relevant medical conditions. For a child, describe changes in feeding, sleep or response to sound.
