Persistent cough
A cough can come from the nose or throat, but asthma and lung conditions are also possible. Duration and breathing symptoms are important.
What to know first
A dry or productive cough, coughing at night, wheeze or throat irritation.
When to see a clinician
Seek advice for a cough lasting three weeks or more, disturbed sleep, wheeze, persistent fever, blood or weight loss. Do not wait three weeks if symptoms are severe.
Possible causes
Postnasal drip, a recent infection, asthma, reflux and other conditions may contribute. More than one cause can be present.
Examination and tests
We assess nasal and throat symptoms and breathing. Suspected chest disease may require referral for appropriate lung investigations.
Tests are selected according to your symptoms and examination. Specialist tests or procedures may require referral.
Treatment
Treating the cause is more important than relying on cough suppressants alone. Persistent symptoms require review of the diagnosis and response.

What you can do at home
Avoid smoke, drink fluids and note triggers and medicines. Do not use adult cough medicines for a child without appropriate advice.

Nasal or throat causes can be assessed here. If asthma or lung disease is suspected, care in the appropriate specialty is important.
What should I tell the clinician?
Tell us when symptoms began, whether they are changing, your medicines and allergies, and any relevant medical conditions. For a child, describe changes in feeding, sleep or response to sound.
