Dizziness and vertigo
Dizziness can arise from the inner ear, the brain or a general medical condition. The pattern and associated symptoms help identify the cause.
What to know first
A spinning sensation, symptoms with head movement, nausea or imbalance; sometimes hearing changes or tinnitus.
When to see a clinician
Seek early advice for a first severe episode, repeated vomiting or sudden hearing loss. Recurrent episodes with turning in bed or ear symptoms can also be assessed.
Possible causes
Inner-ear balance disorders, positional vertigo and other medical causes are possible. A description of spinning alone does not establish the diagnosis.
Examination and tests
We review timing and triggers and may examine eye movements, hearing and balance. Neurological warning signs require urgent assessment elsewhere.
Tests are selected according to your symptoms and examination. Specialist tests or procedures may require referral.
Treatment
Medicines, appropriate repositioning treatment or rehabilitation may be considered for specific causes. No single treatment suits every type of dizziness.
These are general treatment options. Your clinician will discuss which approach fits your condition; not every treatment described is provided at this clinic.
What you can do at home
Sit or lie somewhere safe during an episode. Avoid driving while dizzy and reduce fall hazards.
Frequently asked questions
Should I perform positional exercises myself?
The appropriate manoeuvre depends on the diagnosis. Ask for guidance rather than trying an exercise that may not fit your condition.
What should I tell the clinician?
Tell us when symptoms began, whether they are changing, your medicines and allergies, and any relevant medical conditions. For a child, describe changes in feeding, sleep or response to sound.
