When to see a clinician

Seek advice for new or substantial imbalance, falls, associated hearing changes or symptoms that limit daily activities.

Possible causes

Inner-ear problems, medicines and other medical conditions can contribute. Persistent symptoms can have several interacting causes.

Examination and tests

We assess the circumstances, medicines, hearing and balance. Further evaluation is arranged when another medical or neurological cause is suspected.

Tests are selected according to your symptoms and examination. Specialist tests or procedures may require referral.

Treatment

Treatment and rehabilitation depend on the cause. Persistent symptoms deserve reassessment and support rather than dismissal.

These are general treatment options. Your clinician will discuss which approach fits your condition; not every treatment described is provided at this clinic.

What you can do at home

Reduce fall hazards, use assistance when needed and avoid driving during significant symptoms.

Frequently asked questions

Can dizziness occur without a spinning sensation?

Yes. Non-spinning unsteadiness is also important and should be described during the consultation.

What should I tell the clinician?

Tell us when symptoms began, whether they are changing, your medicines and allergies, and any relevant medical conditions. For a child, describe changes in feeding, sleep or response to sound.
