When to see a clinician

Seek advice if symptoms persist. Food sticking, pain, weight loss, blood, a neck lump or a persistent voice change need earlier assessment.

Possible causes

Nasal drainage, inflammation, dryness, reflux and other throat conditions can contribute.

Examination and tests

The mouth, nose and throat are examined. Endoscopy and further tests are considered when needed.

Tests are selected according to your symptoms and examination. Specialist tests or procedures may require referral.

Treatment

Treatment targets likely or confirmed causes. Even with reassuring findings, new or worsening symptoms should be reassessed.

These are general treatment options. Your clinician will discuss which approach fits your condition; not every treatment described is provided at this clinic.

What you can do at home

Drink fluids, avoid smoke and repeated forceful throat clearing, and note symptoms related to meals or position.

Frequently asked questions

Should I swallow rice to push down a fish bone?

Do not try to force a suspected lodged object down. Seek medical advice promptly.

What should I tell the clinician?

Tell us when symptoms began, whether they are changing, your medicines and allergies, and any relevant medical conditions. For a child, describe changes in feeding, sleep or response to sound.
