Chronic rhinosinusitis
Persistent nasal blockage, thick discharge, postnasal drip or reduced smell may involve chronic rhinosinusitis. Examination helps distinguish it from acute sinusitis, allergic rhinitis and other causes.

About chronic rhinosinusitis
This is prolonged inflammation of the sinus spaces around the nose. Different forms, including eosinophilic disease associated with polyps, asthma or marked smell loss, need different treatment strategies. Discharge colour alone does not determine the diagnosis or need for antibiotics.
When to consult
Seek care for persistent or recurring symptoms affecting sleep or daily life, reduced smell, or one-sided symptoms. Marked swelling around the eye, vision changes, severe headache, high fever or rapid deterioration needs urgent assessment.
Assessment and scope
We review duration, discharge, postnasal drip, smell, asthma, dental symptoms and past treatment, and examine the nose and throat. Tests depend on the findings. CT imaging or surgical assessment may need another institution; this page does not advertise on-site CT.
Treatment principles
Medication, nasal care and other measures are selected according to the condition. The type and duration of medicines vary; do not prolong antibiotics without medical advice. Persistent disease, polyps or a need for surgery may require specialist evaluation elsewhere.
Frequently asked questions
How does it differ from acute sinusitis?
Acute symptoms often develop over a short period after a cold. Persistent or recurrent symptoms need assessment for chronic inflammation or other causes.
Can it feel like phlegm?
Yes. Postnasal drip can feel like mucus in the throat. Cough or breathlessness may also require assessment of the lungs and airways.
