Causes

Inflammation involving eosinophils is important. Diagnosis considers the clinical pattern and test findings rather than symptoms alone.

When to see a clinician

Seek advice for persistent loss of smell or blockage, recurrent polyps after surgery, or nasal symptoms together with asthma.

Examination and tests

Nasal examination, endoscopy, blood tests and sinus imaging may be considered. Specialist assessment may be needed to establish the diagnosis and treatment plan.

Tests are selected according to your symptoms and examination. Specialist tests or procedures may require referral.

Treatment

Steroid nasal sprays and nasal irrigation are commonly considered. Selected cases need oral steroids, surgery or specialist treatments such as biologic medicines. Surgery does not guarantee that polyps will never recur.

These are general treatment options. Your clinician will discuss which approach fits your condition; not every treatment described is provided at this clinic.

What you can do at home

Continue follow-up even after improvement. Discuss asthma treatment and report any reaction to pain medicines. Do not adjust steroid treatment without advice.

Frequently asked questions

Can nasal polyps come back after surgery?

Yes. Long-term control of inflammation and follow-up are important because recurrence can occur.

What should I tell the clinician?

Tell us when symptoms began, whether they are changing, your medicines and allergies, and any relevant medical conditions. For a child, describe changes in feeding, sleep or response to sound.
