Earwax can block the ear canal and affect hearing. Pushing cotton buds deep into the ear may compact wax further.
What is this condition?
Earwax can block the ear canal and affect hearing. Pushing cotton buds deep into the ear may compact wax further.
Main symptoms
A blocked feeling, muffled hearing or discomfort; sometimes there are few symptoms.
Causes
Wax may accumulate because of the shape of the canal, use of hearing devices or attempts to clean inside the ear.
When to see a clinician
Visit if wax is hard to remove, hearing seems reduced, or a child’s eardrum could not be seen during a check.
Examination and tests
The canal and eardrum are examined. Hearing that remains reduced after wax removal may need further assessment.
Tests are selected according to your symptoms and examination. Specialist tests or procedures may require referral.
Treatment
Wax is removed with suitable instruments or suction when appropriate. Hard wax may first need softening. If a child cannot remain still safely, the approach or timing is adjusted.
These are general treatment options. Your clinician will discuss which approach fits your condition; not every treatment described is provided at this clinic.
What you can do at home
Do not insert cotton buds, ear picks or other objects deeply. Ask before using drops if you have ear surgery history, pain or discharge.
