Causes

Small injuries from ear cleaning, moisture, eczema and bacterial or fungal infection can contribute.

When to see a clinician

Seek advice for ongoing pain, itching or discharge, or if swelling affects hearing.

Examination and tests

We examine the canal and eardrum to distinguish outer ear inflammation from other ear problems.

Tests are selected according to your symptoms and examination. Specialist tests or procedures may require referral.

Outer versus middle ear infection

Otitis externa affects the canal between the ear entrance and eardrum. Cleaning or earbuds can irritate this area. Otitis media affects the space behind the eardrum. Tenderness at the entrance is a clue, not a diagnosis.

The examination checks the canal and eardrum before cleaning or medication is chosen. Seek prompt care for severe pain, fever, swelling around the ear, or ear pain with diabetes or reduced immunity.

Treatment

Careful cleaning and suitable ear drops may be used. More extensive infection may need oral treatment. Fungal infections require a different approach.

These are general treatment options. Your clinician will discuss which approach fits your condition; not every treatment described is provided at this clinic.

What you can do at home

Avoid cotton buds, scratching and unprescribed ear drops. Keep irritating earphones out while the canal is sore.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use leftover ear drops?

Not without advice. The appropriate treatment depends on the cause and the condition of the eardrum.

What should I tell the clinician?

Tell us when symptoms began, whether they are changing, your medicines and allergies, and any relevant medical conditions. For a child, describe changes in feeding, sleep or response to sound.
