Nosebleeds
Sit upright, lean slightly forward and firmly pinch the soft part of the nose. Do not tilt your head back; spit out blood that reaches your mouth.
What to know first
Blood from one or both nostrils, sometimes flowing into the throat.
When to see a clinician
Seek prompt help if correct pressure does not stop the bleeding. Recurrent one-sided bleeding, unexplained bruising or bleeding elsewhere also needs assessment.
Possible causes
Dryness, nose picking and inflammation can damage small blood vessels. Medicines and less common local or systemic conditions may contribute.
Examination and tests
We look for the bleeding site and review medicines and medical history. Further tests depend on the amount and pattern of bleeding.
Tests are selected according to your symptoms and examination. Specialist tests or procedures may require referral.
Treatment
Pressure, topical treatment, packing or cautery may be used depending on the source. Heavy bleeding may need care at another medical facility.
These are general treatment options. Your clinician will discuss which approach fits your condition; not every treatment described is provided at this clinic.
What you can do at home
After bleeding stops, avoid picking or forceful nose blowing. Do not stop prescribed blood-thinning medicines without medical advice.
Frequently asked questions
Should I tilt my head back?
No. Lean forward so blood does not collect in your throat.
What should I tell the clinician?
Tell us when symptoms began, whether they are changing, your medicines and allergies, and any relevant medical conditions. For a child, describe changes in feeding, sleep or response to sound.
