About the vaccine

FluMist is a live attenuated vaccine given into both nostrils. It does not use an injection needle, although a sensation of liquid entering the nose may be felt.

Its age range and eligibility differ from injected inactivated influenza vaccines. Suitability is assessed individually.

Tell us before vaccination

  • Current fever or a serious acute illness
  • A previous severe allergic reaction to a vaccine ingredient
  • Pregnancy, an immune system disorder or immune-suppressing treatment
  • Asthma, marked nasal blockage, current medicines or recent vaccinations

Some of these situations, including pregnancy and certain immune conditions, mean the vaccine cannot be given. The pre-vaccination assessment is essential.

Side effects and aftercare

Runny or blocked nose, cough, sore throat, headache or fever may occur. Rare serious reactions, including anaphylaxis, are possible.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, widespread hives or altered consciousness. For 1–2 weeks after vaccination, avoid close contact with people with severe immune deficiency as far as possible.
