AI-assisted influenza testing with nodoca

We offer nodoca influenza testing for ages 6 and over. Throat images and symptom information support the doctor’s assessment. Please call before visiting with fever or requesting testing.

Updated: 15 October 2026 · Medical Director: Dr. Yusuke Honda

Who can have this test?

nodoca supports a doctor's diagnosis by analysing throat photographs, temperature and symptom information. It does not directly detect the virus and does not make the final diagnosis.

Ages 6 and over. Efficacy and safety have not been established for children under 6, and use in this age group is not recommended. A doctor decides whether this test is appropriate.

Insurance coverage depends on applicable conditions. The total charge depends on your insurance, consultation and any additional tests. Please call before visiting with fever or requesting infection testing: 092-851-9893.

What happens during the test?

  1. Questions and examination: tell us your symptoms and when they began.
  2. Throat photographs: open your mouth while a dedicated camera captures images.
  3. AI analysis: the device analyses the images and symptom information.
  4. Doctor's explanation: a doctor considers the result together with the examination and decides whether other tests are needed.

Limitations and precautions

  • The test does not distinguish influenza A from influenza B.
  • A negative result does not rule out influenza.
  • The doctor interprets the result with your symptoms, timing and clinical findings.
  • Another test, including an antigen test, may be necessary.
  • Tell the doctor about loose teeth, mouth injuries, repeated vomiting or difficulty opening your mouth.

The influenza study reported in the device instructions involved 659 patients at 11 Japanese sites. Agreement with PCR was 76.0% for positive results and 88.1% for negative results. These figures describe that study and do not guarantee the outcome for an individual patient.

Frequently asked questions

What is nodoca?

A medical device that analyses throat images and symptom information to support a doctor's assessment of influenza.

Does it use a nasal swab?

The nodoca procedure uses throat photographs instead of a deep nasal swab. Another test may still be needed.

Does it hurt?

The camera is placed in the mouth. Some people may feel discomfort or gag; a pain-free experience cannot be guaranteed.

What is the minimum age?

Efficacy and safety have been evaluated in people aged 6 and over. Use under age 6 is not recommended.

How long does it take?

Image analysis takes a short time, but the full visit includes questions, examination, photography and discussion. Waiting time varies.

Can I have it soon after symptoms start?

A doctor decides based on the timing and symptoms. The test is not guaranteed to detect every early infection.

Can it tell A from B?

No. It does not distinguish influenza A from influenza B.

Does a negative result mean I do not have flu?

No. A negative result alone does not rule out influenza.

Could I still need an antigen test?

Yes. The doctor may decide that another test is necessary.

Is it covered by insurance?

It may be used under Japanese health insurance when the relevant conditions are met. The overall charge depends on the visit and your coverage.

Should I call before visiting?

Yes, please call 092-851-9893 if you have a fever or would like infection testing.
