Main symptoms
Ringing, muffled hearing or a blocked feeling after sound exposure.
Causes
A single very loud sound or substantial noise exposure can damage inner-ear structures.
When to see a clinician
Seek advice the same day where possible for sudden hearing loss or persistent tinnitus after loud noise.
Examination and tests
We ask about the sound exposure, examine the ear and test hearing. Follow-up hearing tests may be needed.
Tests are selected according to your symptoms and examination. Specialist tests or procedures may require referral.
Treatment
Avoiding further loud sounds is essential. Treatment is considered according to the findings and time since exposure; improvement varies.

What should I tell the clinician?
Tell us when symptoms began, whether they are changing, your medicines and allergies, and any relevant medical conditions. For a child, describe changes in feeding, sleep or response to sound.
