Sore throat
Throat pain may follow a cold, but tonsillitis and other conditions can also cause it. Breathing and the ability to drink are the first priorities.
What to know first
Pain on swallowing, irritation, fever or swollen glands.
When to see a clinician
Seek advice for severe or persistent pain, fever, one-sided swelling or difficulty drinking.
Possible causes
Viral infection, tonsillitis and other inflammation are possible. Severe swelling or an abscess needs a different approach.
Examination and tests
We examine the mouth and throat and assess hydration and breathing. Tests or endoscopy may be considered according to the findings.
Tests are selected according to your symptoms and examination. Specialist tests or procedures may require referral.
Treatment
Pain relief, fluids and treatment of the cause are considered. Antibiotics are used when a suitable bacterial infection is suspected or confirmed.

What you can do at home
Rest, take fluids in amounts you can tolerate and avoid smoke. Follow medicine instructions and do not share antibiotics.

Does a sore throat always need antibiotics?
No. Many cases are viral, and the examination helps determine whether antibiotics would help.
What should I tell the clinician?
Tell us when symptoms began, whether they are changing, your medicines and allergies, and any relevant medical conditions. For a child, describe changes in feeding, sleep or response to sound.

Reception opens 15 minutes before each session. Walk-ins are welcome for general consultations. Vaccinations may require an appointment.
Please call before visiting if you have a fever of 37.5°C or higher, a recent positive infection test, a household member with an infection, or would like infection testing. The waiting-time service is in Japanese.
