Snoring and sleep apnoea

Snoring is a sound caused by narrowing of the upper airway. Sleep apnoea involves repeated reduced or stopped breathing during sleep. Symptoms or snoring volume alone cannot establish the diagnosis.

Nasal obstruction, enlarged tonsils, body build and jaw shape may contribute. It can occur without obesity and in children.

When to consult

Seek assessment for witnessed breathing pauses, unrefreshing sleep, morning headaches or pronounced sleepiness. Avoid driving and hazardous work when sleepy.

Habitual snoring and breathing difficulty during sleep in children also warrant assessment. Breathing distress while awake or blue lips needs emergency care.

Scope of our consultation

We review symptoms, family observations, sleepiness, nasal blockage, medicines and alcohol, and examine the nose and throat.

Sleep testing may be needed to confirm and grade the condition. If home sleep testing, PSG or CPAP is needed, evaluation at an appropriate facility will be considered. This page does not advertise home sleep testing, PSG or CPAP initiation or ongoing management at this clinic.

Treatment principles

Treatment depends on the cause and severity. Nasal conditions can be assessed here. Options for confirmed sleep apnoea may include lifestyle measures, CPAP, oral appliances or surgery, selected through appropriate specialist evaluation.

Improving nasal obstruction alone may not resolve sleep apnoea. Discuss medicines and alcohol with a doctor; do not stop prescriptions on your own.

Frequently asked questions

Can I consult about snoring alone?

Yes. We review the pattern, nasal blockage, breathing pauses and sleepiness to decide what assessment is needed.

Does this clinic provide PSG or CPAP?

This is a consultation guide, not an offer of PSG or CPAP at this clinic. Needed tests or treatments may require an appropriate specialist facility.
