Consult us if smells are weaker, absent or distorted. Nasal obstruction, a recent infection, head injury and other causes may need consideration.

Possible causes

Odours may not reach the smell-sensitive tissue high in the nose, or the tissue and nerves themselves may be affected. Rhinitis, sinusitis and post-infectious changes are among the causes.

Difficulty sensing food aromas can also be described as loss of taste. Tell us when the change began, whether it was sudden and which smells you can still detect.

When to seek care and stay safe

Consult ENT for persistent loss after a cold, a sudden change or ongoing one-sided nasal symptoms. Call before visiting if fever or infection is suspected.

Head injury, weakness, speech changes or severe headache requires prompt medical assessment. Do not rely on smell alone to detect gas, smoke or spoiled food.

Assessment

We review infections, injuries, medicines, nasal blockage and taste changes, and examine the nose for inflammation or polyps. Specialist smell tests or imaging may require another institution and are not all advertised as available at this clinic.

Treatment and recovery

Treatable nasal inflammation is addressed according to findings. Recovery after infection varies, and complete recovery cannot be guaranteed. Discuss treatments with a doctor rather than using nasal sprays or steroids long term on your own. Persistent symptoms may need further evaluation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I lose smell without a blocked nose?

Yes, including after infection. A clear-feeling nose does not rule out a smell disorder.

Can I discuss taste changes?

Yes. We ask whether the problem concerns aromas or basic tastes and consider examination and further assessment.
